Biography
Yeonji Hong
Dance Artist / Choreographer
A Celebrated Korean Traditional Dance Artist and Transmitter of Cultural Heritage, Bridging Tradition with Contemporary Expression.

Yeonji Hong is an award-winning Korean traditional dance artist and former member of the National Dance Company of Korea. Holding a PhD in Dance from Sejong University in Seoul, she has performed extensively across South Korea and internationally through cultural exchanges in Japan, China, and Oman.
Her creative voice is deeply rooted in traditional forms such as Taepyeongmu, Samgomu, and the Fan Dance, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens to explore identity, resilience, and artistic fusion. In 2024, Dr. Hong was formally recognized as a transmitter of Pyongyang Geommu (Sword Dance of Pyongyang), designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of South Pyongan Province. This recognition affirms her role in preserving and transmitting one of Korea’s most iconic traditional dances.
She continues to create innovative works that bring depth and beauty to Korean dance aesthetics. Since relocating to Canada in 2018, she has presented performances at venues such as Parliament Hill, Ottawa City Hall, Carleton Place, and the City of Brockville. Most recently, she premiered Lotus Pond, a self-choreographed solo inspired by Monet’s Water Lilies, at Toronto’s Betty Oliphant Theatre (2025). Through teaching, performing, and choreographing, Dr. Hong continues to share Korean cultural heritage while building bridges across cultures and generations.
